Hi everyone. I am currently a philosophy undergrad who will be applying to medical school next year. Last year I shadowed a rad onc who turned me on to hospice and end-of-life care. I have been fostering the interest ever since. I am very interested in shadowing an Indianapolis area physician who participates in this specialty and would appreciate any help that any of you might be able to provide. Thanks in advance! :D

A word about inpatient hospice units, often the patients in these are very difficult cases, e.g., symptom-control crises, families needing respite, near-death, late referrals of patients wanting everything done possible until there really isn't anything more to possibly do, family members in denial and in conflict.

So, there are often a lot of deep and complicated psycho-social/existential issues in play in these cases. I might suggest getting one's feet wet with patients and families that are more or less at-peace with their dying process, so that one can sort of identify and tease away the not-at-peace with dying part, from the more straight-forward dying, which is difficult enough.

Awesome. Thanks for the advice. I am interviewing this week with St. Francis' hospice program.
