HDL CHOL ratio

So, it seems people regularly order this in my hospital. I don't use the ratio to decide statin initiation or dose and I do not understand what purpose this serves, I use the ASCVD risk calculator, am I missing something?

Allegedly it is just another way to assess risk from the Framingham study. I stick with the ASCVD risk calculator as well.

It's another way of getting at non-HDL cholesterol, which is TC minus HDL-c. I find it easier to deal with non-HDL-c than ratios, but it's probably just habit. Ideally, non-HDL-c should be no higher than 30 points above a patient's LDL-c target.
