So I wanna hear from all the docs out there who enjoy or enjoyed their jobs with the NHSC.
What does it take to be successful dealing with a population that no one wants to touch?

I'm an MS3 w/ the intent of doing the loan repayment program in the future, going somewhere really grimey, and going paul farmer style all over the place and changing lives.

I'm serious btw, this isn't a joke thread.

Successful? Do you mean content or happy? Traditional measures of success don't work well with underserved populations. You can't prescribe treatment for poverty. If you feel suited for a job then I'm not sure that WHAT you are doing is so important.
I love my job. If I had to regularly deal with patients arguing with me about "needing" unwarranted imaging or antibiotics in a private practice setting, I would likely quit my job in less than a month.
