Given the new IR/DR track, will the number of DR residency positions be affected accordingly?

Just out of curiosity, I am wondering whether the total number of DR residency positions would be affected, e.g., decrease accordingly given the new IR/DR positions. Or is it unchanged?

Hi RobHan, the answer is yes. The majority (all?) programs have not created new IR/DR spots, they just reserved 1-3 of the DR spots for their integrated programs. So if a program originally had 10 DR residents and has 3 IR spots, they will be accepting 7 DRs and 3 IR/DRs. Note that PGY2-PGY4 are identical for both, so the resident compliment should remain the same. This may change if IR becomes its own department like Rad Onc.

Unfortunately the above is not universally true, and may not be true in many places that have kept DR the same and added IR spots. It's possible there may be a 15-20 percent increase in trainees hitting the market each year. It will be a true test of whether the leaders of radiology care about whether their trainees get jobs or how competitive their specialty is. Let's hope they've learned!
