Honestly, the movie version is pretty great. Les Mis takes a while to get into, but I like it a lot!I LOVE musicals, especially Phantom, but I'm ashamed to admit I've never seen Les Mis.

I must have horrible ears or something
I completely agree with you. Big movie adaptations love to cast leads who couldn't carry a tune in a bucket, or at the very least do not have the singing chops to do some of the more demanding singing that you find in the lead parts. I hated Russell Crowe as Javert in the Les Mis movie especially.UGH. I couldn't <stand> the movie version musically. The scenery was nice, and the pacing was terrific, but the lead singing was just .... horrific. I am very much in the minority in this opinion, though - most people that I talk to really enjoyed the movie.
Tangent: Back in my first previous life (the one before my 17 years in the internet industry) I was a newspaper writer. One of my beats was doing off broadway reviews. It was so awesome to get 2 free tickets to every show that came through Minneapolis.
I mean, it's definitely not the same as seeing it live. I saw it in London two years ago and it was spectacular. But if you've never seen it before, it's not a bad place to start, especially since they can actually watch it as well. (And then they can transition to the original cast album). I'm a huge fan of musicals. Back in my... younger years... (Jesus can I even say that?) I played percussion for different musicals, so I've definitely been a fan of musicals for a while now.UGH. I couldn't <stand> the movie version musically. The scenery was nice, and the pacing was terrific, but the lead singing was just .... horrific. aka why I'm verrrrrrry worried about the Wicked movie coming out. If they mess this up, they're gonna have hell to pay.I completely agree with you. But I'm told if they defy gravity then no one can bring them downaka why I'm verrrrrrry worried about the Wicked movie coming out. If they mess this up, they're gonna have hell to pay.
Had to think about the first musical I actually saw. Bye Bye Birdie. Wicked was my second I saw, but wasn't until after playing several... I think. One of my favorites though. Also lol, Wicked is the first musical I ever saw live and it is also one of my least favorite musicals
My mom just raised me on a lot of classics and I tend to prefer them. That and absurdly sad musicals about highly dysfunctional families (so most of them).Had to think about the first musical I actually saw. Bye Bye Birdie. I definitely watched a lot of high school productions.Don't hurt me, but I think I've seen a grand total of 2 musicals that weren't movie adaptations.
(Not counting any high school productions of course, although those actually weren't half bad imo)
You always have to start somewhere!!! I'll eggucate you as necessary!Don't hurt me, but I think I've seen a grand total of 2 musicals that weren't movie adaptations.

My dad cried during Toy Story. I cried over a scone this morning. It's clear who I get my emotional stability from.I definitely watched a lot of high school productions.
Also the production of Beauty & the Beast at my sister's high school made my dad weep and we still aren't...entirely...sure why? She wasn't even in it lol. And the original Beauty & the Beast barely even held his attention. The whole thing made no sense.

Like, original Toy Story or Toy Story 3 where they had that huge scene where we watched all of the toys slowly slide toward the fiery maw of hell and then watched them accept their inevitable death at the hands of Garbage Satan himself? My dad cried during Toy Story. nope. the original Toy Story.Like, original Toy Story or Toy Story 3 where they had that huge scene where we watched all of the toys slowly slide toward the fiery maw of hell and then watched them accept their inevitable death at the hands of Garbage Satan himself?
Nah. Rabb.it , bruh. I have Hamilton saved on my computer. We'll start with that.Really? You're going to drag me out to see actual musicals? Good luck because I ain't got time for that.
Nah. Rabb.it , bruh. I have Hamilton saved on my computer. We'll start with that.
true. but even 1/2 musical is better than no musical. Especially when it comes to Hamilton and it being the original cast.Fine, but since it's not live I feel I can only count it as half a musical. Also, still may lack time.
Also lol, Wicked is the first musical I ever saw live and it is also one of my least favorite musicals
Modlynch LIS. Obviously a wolf- only monsters don't like Wicked!!Have to admit, I never got aboard the Wicked train. A few good numbers in it. And the backstory is good. But .. I dunno .. it just didn't really satisfy.
Modlynch LIS. Obviously a wolf- only monsters don't like Wicked!!
Great, now I'm getting lynched even in non-WW game threads?
It's a pre-lynching. Now you know that you don't have to play that game because you're already dead.
I'll let this infraction slide due to your prior history of off Broadway musicals. But still. You're crazy.Great, now I'm getting lynched even in non-WW game threads?
But still. You're crazy.
Hahahahaha. I mean, everyone actively on SDN has a certain amount of crazy. It's just taking time to decipher who the craziest of the crazies are. You're just NOW figuring that out?

1. CdoconnI'm demanding a numbered list from most to least crazy.
1 is most crazy, 4 is least crazyI'm demanding a numbered list from most to least crazy.
Wait, if I'm your comod and I hate wicked are you gonna lynch me? Remember, it's difficult to hang somebody if they can defy gravityModlynch LIS. Obviously a wolf- only monsters don't like Wicked!!
I'd lynch you too, but I need your help for the last steps of game design. So I'll settle for pouting in the cornerWait, if I'm your comod and I hate wicked are you gonna lynch me? Remember, it's difficult to hang somebody if they can defy gravity
(yes, I'm going to beat that joke so far into the ground it'll never defy gravity again)
it was hard to get through the musical because there was so much singing....?I love Chicago, and I've seen the Phantom of the Opera movie, but . . . I think those are the only musicals I've seen? And it was so hard to get through Phantom. Just so. much. singing.
It felt like there was no spoken dialogue, at all. Usually there's normal script, then songs, then more normal script. Phantom was tiresome because I got so tired of hearing everything sung and nothing spoken.it was hard to get through the musical because there was so much singing....?
Yeah, some musicals are sung through or are mostly sung through... errr popular musicals coming to mind that are at least mostly sungthrough besides Phantom: Hamilton, Cats, Les Mis, Rent, Miss Saigon, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. There's more, but not as well known/ I'd have to look them upIt felt like there was no spoken dialogue, at all. Usually there's normal script, then songs, then more normal script. Phantom was tiresome because I got so tired of hearing everything sung and nothing spoken.
It took me like three tries to get through Phantom, lol. I swear I actually love musicals, even though I don't think I've expressed enjoyment for a single one on this thread so farI love Chicago, and I've seen the Phantom of the Opera movie, but . . . no shame there. It took me like three tries to get through Phantom, lol. I swear I actually love musicals, even though I don't think I've expressed enjoyment for a single one on this thread so far
Les Mis is easy to walk in blind, you just have to know it's very French and everyone dies. (I had a hard time with Les Mis too my first time, I'm not great at understanding what people are saying when they sing the first time I listen to something)no shame there.
It took me three times to get through Les Mis. The only thing that forced me to watch it was the fact that we were about to see it live, and I wasn't going to be blindsided (plus if I know the lyrics, it's easier for me to fill in the blanks of where my hearing cuts out/ can't hear)
Oh, also I didn't "get" Les Mis until I heard Patti LuPone sing in that musical. Then it made total sense to me, because Patti LuPone.Les Mis is easy to walk in blind, you just have to know it's very French and everyone dies.
