Several schools have August deadline and I am pretty sure it will be busy two weeks at end of July and first week of August. Good luck to everyone!

It does look like the next 2-3 weeks will be fast and furious. However it appears that there are still a lot of schools that haven't announced interview dates yet or they havent been reported here.

Anybody know how late into the fall interviews will be offered? Any hope if you don't lock up a spot in August?

what do you guys think about this possibility. Say you get accepted to one program and say yes, but then you get offered a position in another program that's way more financially beneficially. One programs has tuition and no stipend and then the other programs has no tuition and a large stipend.

what do you guys think about this possibility. Say you get accepted to one program and say yes, but then you get offered a position in another program that's way more financially beneficially. One programs has tuition and no stipend and then the other programs has no tuition and a large stipend.

Once you get an offer, you sign an agreement with a program. Program directors know each other very well, they talk to each other all the time. The last thing you want to do is taking an offer and interviewing in other places. If you try to back-off then the program director that offered you a spot can easily find out where you want to go and contact the other program director and informed him/her that you have signed an agreement and you certainly loose your spot in both places. That's why you should only interview in places that you really want to go. There is nothing wrong with saying "No" to a program if you are not sure whether it is a good option for you or not. Take an offer if you feel good about a certain program and you feel it is worth investing on 2-3 years of your life in that program. Make sure you ask current residents to give feedback about their program and see how they feel about their program. There is always a risk in saying No to an offered spot, but it might be paid off by waiting longer and getting into low tuition residency. Unfortunately it is part of the process...Good luck!

I disagree. There is no contract that is signed, at least not initially. There is a non-refundable deposit to hold your spot. It is there to make sure you are serious about taking the position that is being offered and it is far from legally binding. If there is another program that offers you an interview and subsequently a position and it makes sense for you (cheaper, better program, better location, whatever the reason) then I say take it. Realize you will not get your deposit back from the original program you accepted at. I have heard from an endo program director that this would show a lack of integrity. Tell me how. Logs may have a family to support while in residency and it would be totally irresponsible of him/her to go to a program that costs over $200k for 2 years when there is a program that costs $30k for the same certificate. Or they may have no tuition at all and offer a stipend. That is a very real life decision to make. Tell me how that lacks integrity when programs won't even let you interview at another program if they have accepted you without the threat of calling the other PD because "we all talk to each other." That lacks integrity and is in my mind petty. It is completely weighted in the programs' favor and none in the applicants'. You should be able to visit the programs that see you as a potential resident and offer you an interview. You should be able to see which programs might be a good fit for you (location, price, director, etc.) and then be able to make a decision. If the program directors refuse to join match or come to some understanding then that is their problem. To threaten you all with the chance of no program accepting you because you are trying to make an informed decision of what might be best for you is crazy. Are they just butt hurt because you picked another program over theirs? It is nothing more than inconvenient for them to call the next person on their list. They should be open to the idea that someone might like another program better than theirs and not have to revert to threats if that person chooses to forgo their deposit and go somewhere else. That's life.
I get that that's the way it is right now and I'm calling bs. If this were to happen to somebody and they were to get legitimately blackballed from other programs I would say raise as much hell as you can. Sue the hell out of them (with no legal grounds to do so). Light em up and make an issue of it. Maybe something will change for the next cycle cause it's crazy the way they are doing it now.

I too have seen quite a few switched to diffrent programs, mostly for financial reasons. I realize the endo community is pretty small, especially the academic field. While the PDs do talk to one another, as long as you provide them with reasons they can understand, such as location, family, $, etc, they shouldn't hold it against you. Having said, I could also see how lack of proper communication can put you on the blacklist for both programs. I'm sure the PDs at private institutions are well aware of it and have a back up list. If you ask me, I think it is a great gig to make a couple of thousand dollars for making one more phone call! Perhaps that explains why they tend to offer positions in the later stage of the application cycle.

If you've been accepted into a program and place a deposit, then go ahead an interview at other programs. They cannot rennig your offer once you've been accepted. Endodontic residency is unusual in that it is a game that professionals have to play if they want it--it's unique to all other medical and dental residencies because of the ridiculous process involved. The ADEA and hopefully soon the AAE will change the endo application process to make it a little more reasonable....the no-match is a problem, the fact that programs don't publish when their interview dates are until two weeks before (expecting working professionals to be free on such short notice), and the fact that most programs require in-person interviews are all part of an antiquated process that, quite honestly, is shameful to the endodontic community.

I've received several invitations, and they were all at least 3 weeks before the proposed interview dates. I suppose if they call you in less than 2 weeks left, somebody probably had withdrawn his or her spot (or the program is poorly organized). I yielded a few, so those programs had to find someone fast. But then again, that is same for almost all residency programs. I am working full-time as well, so such last-minute phone calls are annoying, but expected. IMHO, I prefer non-match, because it is great if you match your top choice, but if not, the post-match scramble sucks.

Anyone coming to interview in Ann Arbor?

I am not trying to be negative or disrespectful to the community at all, but this experience has troubled me with a few of the schools and I wonder if anyone else shares my sentiment. I applied quite early, having started the process months in advance with research as to which programs I wanted to try for admission at. I was very displeased to receive an email from VA Long Beach weeks after I had already spent time and money on my application (including my transcripts), not to mention the headache and hassle for my recommenders who wrote individual letters and mailed them outside of PASS. I can't believe the cancellation of the program wasn't listed somewhere. I am similarly disappointed with the lack of communication for the programs that most certainly won't accept candidates right out of school. I feel that if that is their decision, it is quite acceptable, but that the information should be appropriately conveyed so as not to waste money of applicants. I had a discussion with the Program Director at a school who was very pleasant and earnest about how the school simply doesn't take applicants out of school. If that's the case, shouldn't it be listed on the website? Otherwise, isn't it almost dishonest to take the PASS fee AND a supplemental fee? If that's what they choose to do, that's great, but I really think these schools (Einstein, UCSF, USC to name the ones I am familiar with) make it extremely hard for people directly out of school, then maybe the process should include that information in a different way? I still applied to these schools when I shouldn't have because I now know it quite literally was a waste of money for me. Anyone else see my viewpoint or is the dialect on the websites enough so that I should have known better than to apply? Thank you.

Agreed. This process has been anything but transparent, and the most valuable information I've gotten were from people from my school who have gone to those schools. I also heard that whether the pre-doc endo director at your school has a good relationship with residency directors makes a big difference as to whether your letter of recommendation will be taken seriously.

Next week will be a busy week and remaining programs might send their interviews as well. So good luck everyone with your interview invitations and good luck with traveling around the country!

Some deadlines aren't until Aug 15. Even though there's been so much activity, it seems like it may continue for a few weeks even with interview invites. Best of luck to everyone. Wishing you all the best!
