I'll further specify:
Lets assume the axon of one single sensory neuron is cut somewhere near the terminal afferent nerve ending. After the lesion, this sensory neuron of course can't sense any external stimuli anymore.
What I'm interested in is what would happen to the rest of the axon still connected to the soma of the neuron.
In neuronal injury, the distal part usually degenerates if not reconnected properly and quickly.
But what about the proximal part?
Would there be any degeneration as well?

I would be very thankful if someone could post me a research paper about this specific question. I know what happens after nerve injury in general, but I would be interested if there was any research aiming at the anatomical changes after injury in sensory neurons specifically.
