Class of 2021 . . . how ya doin?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yeah, it was the "talking to a brick wall" aspect of A&M's that was the most disconcerting part. Later people at home asked me how it went and I was like "I honestly have no idea." Which was also the answer to the question "Who interviewed you?"

Since there's no feedback it's like making a series of speeches for which you have not prepared  to a very small audience who are scoring you as you talk.

ETA: Absolutely nothing fun about it, and I remember wondering right afterward who on earth said that was fun. I did four years of speech/debate competitions in high school (fun even though I was absolutely terrible at it) and I was still overwhelmed by this style of interview.

Got my tetanus vaccine and first rabies shot at the same time today... terrible idea. Never realized how much the tetanus vaccine hurts and already running a 100 degree fever as a side effect. :grumpy: But at least it will all be worth it for vet school right? Lol

Tetanus shots always mess me up! I still remember when I got my first one in elementary school and I couldn't move my whole arm!!

At the same time? Dang girl you brave.

I got a tetanus booster last week and took ibuprofen before. Made all the difference in the world. My arm barely got sore (compared to last time when I did the whole fever/chills/stiff arm thing).

Yeah I probably should've done some research beforehand. The ibuprofen I took last night helped with the fever and muscle soreness, but then I've got hit with body aches and really bad nausea since about 4am this morning and had to take off work today.

I had a tetanus a couple years ago and don't remember it being that bad.

I got the meningitis and the first rabies shot on consecutive days and one of them gave me really bad body aches for a week. I'm guessing the rabies vaccine because that vaccine site was really sore too where the meningitis one was not.

I finally remembered I'm an adult and can take ibuprofen if I want to and that helped some. But it took me three days to remember that I didn't just have to wait it out lol.

Reading about everyone's reactions makes me worried about my immune system sometimes. :p I think the worst reaction I ever had to a vaccine was the Gardasil series and I think I just got a vaguely tender goose egg from one of the three in the series. I've had my meningitis and tetanus boosters within the past year and a half or so and both were pretty much like every other shot I've had. The rabies series will probably wreck me though.

I'm worried I've fallen through some crack in the medical system. I haven't had immunizations since 7th grade (so . . . 11 years ago?).

PBC noooooo. I still have a bump on my arm from when I last got my tetanus. It's basically scar tissue but won't fully heal over or disappear. I know I need my TDAP next time I go to the drs. Also doubt I'll need rabies for my program. Woooo not having to deal with bad reactions (but sad because not vet school)

I think I've only had 2 since then and one was the tetanus booster. I'm pretty sure the other one was some meningitis shot that when I got it didn't even cover the most common/dangerous form (things your doctor doesn't tell you, but you learn in micro lol), so you aren't doing too bad lol

lol I've only had one shot since then and it was meningitis. That shot messed me up too. Had complete paralysis of my arm for about 4 hours. But then it was fine. The nurse didn't want to believe me that I hadn't had a tentaus booster in 14 years. I think she asked me like three times.

Tetanus booster of some sort is supposed to be every 10 years unless you do something (like cut your foot with a rusty piece of metal or something) then you're supposed to get one right then

Talked to my doctor about where I could get a rabies vaccine yesterday. She suggested the travel clinic, but they said they won't do it and said I'd have to go to the ER.
So... screw it. I'll just get it done through the school. Also, I have no idea how to get proof of my past rabies vaccines so I may have to get the whole series again? I don't know. I just know it's not listed with all my other immunizations so I'm going to have to ask about that.

But at least my tetanus is indeed up to date? Don't have to get that one again for another 3 years.

I think if you already have gotten the rabies series they can just take a titer and as long as its at a certain level most schools will take that as proof. I'd check with MSU though.

They will do titers if it's been more than 2 years since the vaccine but I assume I would still need proof I had the vaccines in the first place. And I had the series about 11 years ago so I'm very doubtful that a titer is going to be sufficient. I was just hoping for a booster rather than repeating the whole series though.

For my school a titer is enough- it's worth asking. I have no idea how long the vaccine series lasts, but a vet I know says his was still good after twenty years (though I doubt that's typical).

And an update on my rabies vaccines- I've had the first two. After reassuring me that they would code the vaccines as immunizations, not injections, the clinic did indeed code them as injections so my insurance won't cover everything. I hope I can get them to change it and resubmit to my insurance, because I really don't want to pay an extra $400-500 for their mistake.

I probably will get a titer first just in case. I'm just betting I'll still need a booster and I think first I still need to find out how I get proof that I had the series in the first place. So... will be calling my dr again about that. :p

I feel like it should've gotten put in your records and be part of your state of MI immunization record thing..... That's weird that your doctor can't find it though...

I didn't ask her about it specifically yet so I don't know that she can't find them. I just know that it's not on my immunization record because she gave me that and they aren't there.
I did have two of the vaccines in another state so I don't know if that made a difference or if it would have been recorded somewhere else anyways or if there's just no record of it at all which would be weird because I know darn well that I had them. I'll have to call and ask my dr about it though. I don't know anything.

Hey guys, has anyone had to submit documentation yet for the health professions loan or the loan for disadvantage students? My school is asking for a financial aid transcript from all my colleges and I'm not sure exactly what that is. I was going to call them, but figured I'd ask in here first in case anyone has done this already.

I haven't heard anything since sending in my purple and orange sheets. Should I have? Maybe because I didn't qualify for financial aid in undergrad? I did the FAFSA and sent in my transcripts already too.

Not sure if everyone has or not? I'm pretty sure they received my purple and orange sheet cuz they sent me an email asking if it was alright it put my info back into the school's directory. Did you fill out the scholarship application too? I think only certain people qualify to apply for the health professions loan but I'm not 100 percent sure.

Yeah I filled the scholarship application out too.

For those moving cross country: what parks/monuments/etc are you going to stop at along the way, if any

Definitely thinking of hitting Vegas, my brother lives there! Also might hit Yellowstone and Yosemite! If anyone has any other ideas I would love them!

You should go to Red Rock Canyon while you're in Vegas! It's super close and gorgeous. Awesome for rock climbing and hiking, or just to walk around or drive through.

I'm moving... from Texas back to Oklahoma. I plan to pause and look at windmills aaaaaand that's about it. :yeahright:

I recommend pausing to look at the sky as well. That's a once in a lifetime opportunity.

I'm definitely going to be pausing to look at the sky as I drive an hour west.

100% go to both of these parks. Seriously, cannot recommend more highly.

If you can camp in Tuolomne Meadows in Yosemite, that'd be my pick for a place to stay there.

Also, there's a fun horseback riding tour company on the eastern side of Yosemite (towards Mono Lake) if you're looking for a fun day activity :)

Kings Canyon & Sequoia are also really, really fun (and less crowded), and are not too far from Yosemite! It's pretty easy to do all 3 of them in a combined trip.

I probably shouldn't look at the sky while I drive though. Probably wouldn't be the best idea. I could also stop at one of the 18493927394018474920184840202 casinos, but the last time I was there, I got an URI (the one that began this three week nonsense) so I've got bad feelings about that. I could also stop to look at wheat. Or cattle. Oh Oklahoma. :shifty:

@Coopah I used to live in Utah and there are some cool national parks there (arches, zion, bryce). Also have to mention the grand canyon since I'm in AZ :) Not sure if any of those are along your route but I thought I would mention them in case they are

I take the backroads from Tulsa to Stillwater. I stop to see the armadillos and possums and coyotes...or is that just so they don't end up splattered on the grille of my car?

You gotta watch out for the suicidal deer too! My friend was going 65 and a deer jumped out in front of her car. Both she and the deer were fine, the car was totaled.

Thankfully I've yet to see a deer! But I am a bit paranoid about one jumping in front of my car. Thank goodness your friend was okay!

Yeah I'm really paranoid about deer too haha! There's a toll road that goes around Austin where the legal speed limit is 85 mph, so naturally everyone goes 100. And they've been having issues where cows and hogs have wandered onto the highway! So add that one to the paranoia!

Nice thanks! Since I am moving across the whole damn country, I can go wherever I want in the process. I'm determined to make this a super fun trip! Thanks for the advice!

Yosemite is a day trip you can do while you're in Davis so you don't necessarily need to do it on the way there. :)

Well I was just thinking if there's somewhere further away that she'd want to go that's on the way across, don't waste a day on Yosemite since she can go there when she has a free day or two anyway!

Greats ideas, I was definatly thinking doing it on the trip because I figured I wouldn't have any free time, or money to do a horseback tour once I started.
