Thought this would be helpful for everyone to look at, and see trends from past years.

Interesting to see how it is getting more competitive each year. From extrapolating the data (although I doubt they will/did continue to follow a linear pattern) I would assume current statistics are:

Step 1: 248
Step 2: 257
10-11 ranked programs
50%+ AOA
Plenty of Research

Also, does anyone know why there has not been a charting outcomes for the past 3 years. It seems like they were being published pretty regularly every 1-2 years until 2011.

I'm curious to know as well. Based on SDN there was some infighting between the NRMP and the AAMC, hence a current hold on Charting Outcomes.

They did have one for the NRMP and ECFMG for IMG graduates from this year: http://www.nrmp.org/wp-content/uplo...s-in-the-Match-IMG_Final_Revised.PDF-File.pdf

Also have to realize that by seeing the Charting of the Outcomes, it creates even more self-selection, than if applicants hadn't seen it (i.e. more people giving up and not bothering to apply).

The CiM medicine website lists statistics from an AAMC document entitled "Characteristics of Entering Residents, 2012–2013."

The data includes scores for people who matched to PGY-1 and PDY-2 advance programs.

For US MD students who matched, the mean STEP 1 was 241 with a SD of 16.1, and STEP 2 was 246 with a SD of 18.7. NB: these numbers include both recent graduates and applicants who had previously graduated from a US MD school.

The other numbers in the document seem a little wonky, so take it FWIW

Edit: I was comparing their number of applicants to the NRMP charts, but the NRMP only lists applicants who ranked at least one spot for that specialty. Perhaps the reason why the number of unmatched, US MD applicants is so high in the AAMC document is that it includes people who had no shot at derm but still applied but did not get any interviews

Edit, edit: You know what's super janky? In the EM document, US MD are in their own category, while in the derm document, current and past US MD students/graduates are grouped together

The Careers of Medicine website reports its numbers are for 2012-2013 and derm was at 241 I believe. So derm may becoming less competitive. There are variations from year to year as well, though. A new Charting Outcomes is expected this year so we shall see.

I hope you aren't seriously using Step 1 score as the only factor in a specialty's level of competitiveness...

Afaik, we interviewed ~40 people this year, and I heard only 2 people had below 240. Derm is nutso.

Again, n of 1.

So bc the average USMLE Step 1 from someone who matched into Derm was 244 (2011) down to 241 (2012-2013), this leads you to believe that derm is becoming less competitive? Really?!!? :smack:

Thank you for such an interesting and informative topic.:)
