Hey gang. Can someone help me out please? I'm having trouble finding a lot of information on the CL application process. I assume you apply in July? Do interviews generally take place in the fall? I know the match is in January. Do any programs offer positions outside the match? Just trying to plan my fourth year and trying to make sure I do this right.

Fellowships (in any specialty) are not bound by the match and can offer positions outside the match. PSM didnt used to be in the match but as programs weren't honoring the code of letting applicants wait until october to accept a position, they joined the match to be fairer. Most of the good ones (there's not many good ones) will try to fill through the match. Many positions will be available afterwards since its a small pool of largely questionable people applying. Is there a C-L director at your residency you can talk to for further advice?

Which ones would you consider good? I assume the top ones obviously like MGH and the Brigham, but what about some of the others like BU? We have a CL service with a director and I am getting advice, but he went through fellowship a while ago and didn't realize there was a match now, so I want to explore other opinions as well.

Thank you for your help.

Applying for Fellowships

This is just my opinion but I think these sorts of fellowships might be most useful for people who want to become fellowship directors, work on a C-L service at a major academic medical center in the NE (and it isn't a must), or who did not have the opportunity to train at major academic medical center during residency. You want to avoid fellowships that are VA heavy. The VA is not the place to get further skills in this area. You want to spend most of your time at a major academic medical center where you get to see all sorts of zebras and cool cases, and work with people who have specialisms (either clinically or research wise) in areas such as psycho-oncology, HIV psychiatry, neuropsychiatry, transplantation psychiatry, perinatal psychiatry. You want to avoid places that spend a lot of time consulting to the ED. You may want to consider how much outpatient exposure you want as it may enhance your marketability if you can develop skills in integrated care or collaborative care.
