I'm wondering how my writing for the GRE is. I've been practicing, reading sample essays, and trying to work at it. But I'm not sure how it's going... Here is an ISSUE prompt:

“People who work in the arts and humanities should earn less than those who work in the sciences and economics because the benefit of the arts and humanities to the population is less important than that of scientific or economic endeavors.”

Write your own response to the recommendation in which you discuss why you either disagree or agree with it. Support your response with evidence and/or examples. Use a hypothetical set of circumstances to illustrate the consequences of accepting or rejecting the recommendation, and explain how this informs your thinking.

While those professionals in the science and economic fields may provide more immediate advantages and thus initially appear to be more beneficial, arts and humanities professionals also provide equal contributions and benefits to society. As such, arts and humanities workers should earn an equal income compared to those working in the science or economic field. Reasons for this are the arts and humanities ability to: expand thinking; create and design new material; and document and preserve old material—without these contributions, such professionals as scientists and economists would not be able to perform their duties as effectively. As such, both arts and humanities as well as scientists and economists help one another equally and should therefore earn equal incomes.

The first reason arts and humanities workers should earn an equal income is because their components help to expand general knowledge, the ability to make connections, and communicate effectively. For example, philosophy helps promote an approach to think with an open mind and consider multiple possibilities without bias—this skill is essential to doctors who have to diagnose patients and researchers who have to solve complex problems within the lab. Without the ability to problem solve or think open-mindedly, medical mysteries would go unsolved and research would never progress. Another example is how literature and art help to develop the skills of making connections and effective communication. Economists and scientists alike must be able to make connections between data sets and evidence, as well as understand how to properly communicate their findings and knowledge of the data and evidence. Again, without this ability, the progression of science and economics would never be able to be passed on to other professionals or the general public.

The second reason for earning an equal income is because the arts and humanities help create and design new methods of learning and understanding. For example, drawings and illustrations in medical textbooks have over the years become more detailed, colorful, and even lifelike, which further helps medical students grasp the fundamental material the need to succeed in their profession. It has also helped foster the engineering of cutting edge medical techniques such as microscopic surgery and practice intubation dummies, as well as new technology such as the ergonomic design of Apple products. Without the ability to create and design new approaches to common problems and barriers to learning, scientific knowledge would not have progressed as rapidly as it has.

The final reason for earning an equal income is because humanity fields such as history helps to document and preserve information and artifacts. For example, early mechanistic and anatomical drawings by da Vinci surely helped early medical professionals learn and improve on the knowledge that he and earlier scientists had suggested. Also, economists often develop predictions for future trends based on past information; if economic records and details had not been preserved or described, they would not be as easily able to consider the future economic trends.

To conclude, arts and humanities workers provide equal benefits to society, particularly for those who work in the science and economic fields. They help to expand knowledge; develop the ability to communicate and make connections; create and design new ways for people to learn and improve their understanding of material; and finally they help document and preserve old information that helps people learn from the past and better predict the future. As such, those working in the arts and humanities field should earn an equal income compared to those in the science and economic field.
