The American Association of Pathologists’ Assistants (AAPA) is pleased to announce the launch of the AAPA Macroscopic Examination Guidelines: Utilization of the CAP Cancer Protocols at the Surgical Gross Bench (Grossing Guidelines) and online publication of the 1st edition.

The AAPA Macroscopic Examination Guidelines have been created for use by all those involved in the macroscopic handling of surgical cancer cases including pathologists’ assistants, pathology residents and pathologists. The Grossing Guidelines are based on specified relevant source documents, drafted by pathologists’ assistant experts and supported by the information provided by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC).

The Grossing Guidelines are designed, as much as possible, to mirror the applicable CAP Cancer protocol and include applicable molecular and immunohistochemical considerations. In addition to the 67 protocols, the grossing guidelines include over 80 illustrations beautifully depicting the TNM staging criteria for many of the tumors included in the guidelines. These guidelines will, ultimately, serve patients by ensuring that the macroscopic examination of cancer resection specimens is compliant with CAP Cancer Protocols, the AJCC Cancer Staging Manual, and provide optimization of the pre-analytic steps necessary to promote appropriate molecular studies

The Grossing Guidelines are available for download by visiting the AAPA website www.pathassist.org and clicking on the Grossing Guidelines tab.
