Required Colorado Essay
Part A. The School of Medicine regards the diversity of an entering class as an important factor in serving the educational mission of the school. Please write about things in your background that have been important to your development or that have been challenging to you on your path to a career in medicine. These could include your socioeconomic status, culture, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, sexual identity, and work or life experiences. Explain how these have influenced your goals and preparation for a career in medicine.

Part B. Please write about the “fit” between your experiences and goals and the University of Colorado School of Medicine. If you are a reapplicant, please include information on how your application has changed.

Please answer both parts in this single essay. Limit the essay to 1500 characters, including spaces (approximately 300 words).

Part C. If you are a re-applicant, please explain how you and your application has changed since your previous submission. Limit this response to 1500 Characters.

Urban Track (only if you select this optional track):
Please answer each of the questions below separately. This statement should not exceed 4500 characters, including spaces (approximately 750 words). Do not repeat the content from your AMCAS or Colorado Secondary Application essays.

  • A. Describe the type of urban community health project that would be of greatest interest to you. Try to be as specific as possible regarding a particular culture or population of patients you are interested in and a topic you would like to study.
    • 1. Reasons for your interest in the CU-UNITE Urban Underserved track.
    • 2. If you have had a prior experience in an urban underserved community either volunteer, work-related, and/or personal, describe how this has impacted your decision to apply to this track.
  • B. Describe how you plan to incorporate urban underserved health care into your career following completion of your schooling.
  • C. You are a student spending your first summer working in an urban-underserved, uninsured community in Denver. You are on a field visit and notice a car that appears to be abandoned, but then on closer observation you notice that there are small children asleep in the back seat wearing dirty clothes with left over fast food on the floor boards. You notice a strong odor of urine and feces coming from the car. A woman is sitting under a tree nearby and is also poorly dressed and unkempt and appears to be in her last trimester of pregnancy. She has visible lesions on her legs and arms. Identify the needs that you see in this family from the perspective of a student working with urban underserved uninsured populations. Please describe how you would attempt to address the needs of this family both in context of their potential health issues and social situation.
Rural Track (only if you select this optional track):
Describe your experience in and commitment to rural Colorado and your vision of working as a primary care physician in rural Colorado. Please limit your rural track essay to 1500 characters or less (about 300 words).

Good luck to everyone applying!

Wow, according to MSAR, CU is switching to MMI starting this cycle.

I just received an offer to be a TA but my AMCAS is already submitted and verified. Any suggestions as to how I should get this update into my application?

Secondaries.

Even though I will submit my secondaries before I TA? It doesn't really seem to fit into the prompts from last year. Is there a spot in secondaries for updates to your application?

You could always see if CU accepts updates. If so, then you could tell them in that fashion if it doesn't fit into your secondary app.

At least during the last application cycle, CU strictly did not accept updated.

Submitted my AMCAS app a few weeks ago, got the email that it is processed a few days ago.

I'm a reapplicant (currently on this year's high priority waitlist), and last year immediately got a secondary when AMCAS was processed. Has anyone received their 2018 secondary yet?

Your primary hasn't been transmitted to the school yet. Primary apps start getting transferred to schools next Friday (6/30). You won't receive a secondary until then.

Amcas wont start transmitting applications until next Friday, 6/30. Even if your app is verified, it still hasn't been transmitted yet.

Hi everyone, I heard that Colorado only sends secondaries to "applicants meeting baseline requirements".

I couldn't find any specifics online, so I thought I'd ask if anyone here knows what these baseline requirements are.

Applying OOS 3.84 519MCAT, no absolutely wow-worthy ECs. Possible or wishful thinking?

Your stats are probably good enough to get you invited to complete the secondary application, so if you think you can write a killer response to their essay prompt then I'd say it's worth a try.

I'm pre-writing my secondary right now. I am leaning toward discussing how growing up in a large family created very close ties to my cousins and how my fit with CU is largely based on my family ties to the area. I am not originally from Colorado but I moved here last june and have a lot of family in the area. I qualify as an IS applicant. Do you all think that is appropriate or should I focus the secondary more on my specific career goals?

This is a weird question but I'd appreciated some advice:
I don't have any ties to Colorado besides some distant relatives who live there. Distant enough that I'm not sure it would be worth mentioning except that one of them is a very recognizable and popular government figure. Is it at all helpful to mention this on secondaries? It feels...shady to me. I don't want to exploit achievements that aren't my own, but I also really want to go to school here. Thoughts?

If you can work it in that this relative somehow influenced your decision to apply at CU, go for it. However your instinct is right that they are looking more for your personal motivations and the reasons you feel connected to the school/why you are a good fit for the school. That story will make for a more interesting secondary, anyway.

Space reserved for prompt.

Please post the essays or lack thereof (in addition to word or character counts) in this thread and tag one of the pre-allo mods (WedgeDawg, Ismet, Lucca, or gyngyn) so we can update the OP.

Good luck to everyone applying!
can those of you receiving secondaries please post the essay questions?

Can someone clarify the reapplicant piece in the first essay as opposed to the second essay? What is the big difference here?

Received mine today! ~73 LizzyM.

Question for those who have already started - can I change my password? I've been able to for all of my others, but can't figure it out for this one.

CU SOM accepts the FAP fee waiver right? Any FAP recipients here that don't have the option for it?

I'm assuming it'll go through automatically at some point but just curious!

I emailed them about it, no reply yet. I am assuming the same though.

"Please check this box to verify that you understand that you must be eligible to receive Federal Student Aid to be admitted to the University of Colorado School of Medicine."

So ... as a Canadian citizen, I suppose that means there's no point moving forward with this if I'm not eligible for Federal Student Aid? I did not even know this was a requirement.

The MSAR says it accepts International and Canadian citizens, but I can't find anything about the acceptance policy on the website. You should definitely call today to clarify!

Hey everyone! I had a question about Part C: If I am not a reapplicant to U of CO, but I have applied to schools in the past, does this question still apply to me?

Please post their response if you do call/email. Canadian here as well. Thank you!

Pretty sure this only applies to Colorado.

So they emailed back and said yes it will be applied automatically.

Is it seen as a disadvantage to not apply to the Colorado Springs branch?

Secondary submitted!

My status on the application portal doesn't reflect submitted secondary or received payment? It seems like the website just isn't very good, but it appears everything is submitted. Anyone else?

Secondary submitted! Very excited and hopeful, this is my state school and I would totally love to go here.

Your state school is UIC, mate. I'm sure being an IL resident definitely doesn't hurt at Loyola, though.

wow. so glad i looked at this thread. my secondary invite also went to spam o_O
