2017-2018 Interview Thread -- Radiology

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Did you hear a reply back after you messaged about scheduling interviews? I messaged but the coordinator hasn't sent a confirmation message. Wondering if they do a "get all preferences before scheduling" kind of thing, waiting 24-48 hours. But that would be odd since they specifically say it's a first-come first-serve basis, so I don't see why they would need to delay sending confirmation messages...

I responded an hour after the invite was sent and the November day was already full. December was still open. Heard back within 30 minutes.

I've subscribed to this thread. Yet, I still visit the forum and thread to see if anything has changed or if another batch interview invitations have been sent. Please tell me I'm not the only one who's this obsessive and anxious.
Every email I get is checked with the speed of a thousand gazelles.
I'm agree than rejections are not cool.
But from my point of view their rejection letter was very polite and kind.
Thought it was a fine, nicely-worded rejection.

I'd rather be rejected sooner than later if it means one less program to hold out hope/stress over!

Are the ones listed just the DR invites? Or do the IR invites usually go with the DR invites?

Just curious, did you reply to Albany's invite message or send a separate, new message? I replied within 15 min and have yet to hear back, wondering if I did something wrong.

Sounds exactly like what it is. An acknowledgement of your application...

Anyone apply to "top tier" programs?
Yeah. None I'm expecting to get interviews at, but when you're dropping this kind of money, you might as well pay a few extra bucks and throw your hat in the ring. Incredibly surprised I survived the UPMC cut given that all of my strengths are in life experiences and not my numbers.

Thats the right mindset. I applied to a bunch of top-tier programs last year with a step 1 in the 230s and was surprised to get interviews at some of them. Its a total crapshoot, don't rule yourself out till you get that rejection email.

I'm in the same boat, replied rather than new separate message. No reply back. By the way, does your "TO" section on your sent mail say "Albany Medical Center Program - Interventional Radiology-Integrated"? I ask because the "FROM" box on the interview invite says "Albany Medical Center Program." Wondering if that makes a difference. I just hit "reply" so it must have auto-populated it.

Responded through ERAS, but I don't think it matters much as long as you email the correct person.

Anyone apply to "top tier" programs?

If by "top tier" you mean MGH/UCSF/JHU/Duke/Mallinckrodt etc., then looking at historical threads on interview invitiations, the programs wait until MSPE becomes available (after October 1). Since theee programs are highly regarded, they have a pick of anyone they want (to an extent). To differentiate some with AOA, high board scores, high class rank, and research, they need a differentiating factor. The MSPE allows them to do that, because they have comments from clinical rotations. Because the margins between candidates is so small, comments about a person play a bigger role. These programs are very selective with who they choose to interview, and look at everything before inviting for an interview.

Hey guys i know this is dumb but I'm getting pretty nervous here, haven't gotten any interviews. i feel it probably has to do with my scores, 221/236. did pretty well during my 3 years. school is only P/F for the 2 years got mainly HP for clinical. I go to a big state school in SouthEast, have lots of research (on 1 big paper in JVIR( as well as an abstract) with 5/6 other abstracts/posters. have very good letters from IR/DR/IM/Surg.I have had leadership roles in SIR and have been very active in my local IRIG/RIG. I feel i have a very strong background in IR since early in medical school and my application reflects it.

Do most programs really filter out and not look at the whole applicant? I know they get a crap ton of applicants so i understand, just irks me to personally Know students who have done very little to nothing in IR get interviews with stellar scores (250+). Is this just expected? I know its only been a few days and don't want to sound like a downer but i can't help but wonder lol. Hope I'm not the only feeling this way right now.

Wondering if i should accept the fact that i will have more than likely have to do DR>> ESIR/Independent?

Give it time. No more than 3-5 programs have extended interviews.

Your board scores are on the low side for IR. To be honest, they're below average for DR as well. Not all is lost as there may be some IR program directors who may look past your scores and choose to invite you because of your obvious, demonstrated interest. Even if you interview with them, will they rank you highly? All you can do is apply and do the best you can at IR interviews. I do know of an individual with similar scores who matched into IR, but they also had pretty clear demonstrated interest.

Have you talked to your home program and your home program's director about reaching out to get you interviews? Your research mentor (since you mentioned published in JVIR)? Any connections via people you've met at IR conferences you could use that may help you get an interview? These are all avenues to consider.

With that said, they may be the exception and not the rule. With a score like yours, and assuming you are a US Senior and applied to many programs, you should have no problem matching into a DR residency. I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but matching into a DR residency may be something you need to prepare to accept.

Don't get frustrated. It wouldn't be the end of the world. Trust me.

Does Loma Linda give different available dates depending on whether you did an away? Seems like away students are given just the 12/4 date, whereas non-aways have the added dates in October and November. Can anyone chime in?

Hrm, I haven't heard back from some of these programs, which I consider myself competitive for. But, I'm also missing a LOR... damn it, lol.

I did not do an away at LLU, and from my end there are only October and November dates available.

I have the same question. I only have the 12/4 date available. When I saw Leahy post more dates, I went back in and still only 12/4. I have an away scheduled with them, so it seems that is what's going on.

That makes sense...I guess "top tier" for me is like Wake Forest, Cleveland Clinic, UNC Chapel Hill, UPMC haha

Yeah that was my logic. It's like might as well try, at this point. Maybe we'll get lucky right? haha. I didn't get the UPMC rejection e-mail either so I guess we made it through their initial filter. Some of the more competitive places I applied to were like UPMC, Wake Forest, UNC Chapel Hill, Miami Jackson Memorial, U of *ichigan, Vandy, Cleveland Clinic to name some.
