2017-18 Pain Fellowship Interview Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I don't think there is any way for us to see when programs download or start reviewing our applications.

bummer. I'm anxiously awaiting some LOR uploads, although I'm hoping that given that this week is match week and I'm sure there will be a few weeks of new resident emails/paperwork that coordinators will be busy sending, that will give me a few days to get this finalized. I keep checking my inbox. I'm glad I did not apply super early - that would have made me super duper anxious!

See above. If you were hoping to get some of these early interviews, you're clearly late. But if you wanted to interview at the later locations, you are probably fine. Hard to know for sure when each program starts reviewing our applications.

How are letters uploaded? Do the letter writers upload them themselves? One of my LOR writers told me they do not have an ERAS account and the coordinator is unable to help upload letters. Is that the typical scenario? Are coordinators unable to do this?

Does it mean anything if a program tells you something is incomplete in your app and that they need it before they can review it and consider it complete? I got an email from Upenn today. They are also asking about a med school diploma. How do we upload that? I'm surprised they are asking for one.

Also how did you guys manage attendings who had difficulty uploading letters into ERAS because they did not have accounts?

If you send them a request through ERAS, I think it will guide them through the process.

Yeah I did that. The attending though is not very tech savvy so I"m a bit worried. I got another message saying apps are being reviewed from a different program. I hate this feeling. I'd be happy with 6-8 IVs. ugh so nerve wrecking.

There are barely 6-8 programs total that have sent out interview invites. Be patient. (It's hard for me, too)

Yeah I know. That's why I did not apply super early - I figured I'd be super anxious! It sucks though for me because I"m PM&R in the sense that I think I'm at a disadvantage already. We'll see!

I know ITE doesn't always mean much, but I am wondering if some programs are waiting for this year's ITE score to come out?

It certainly gives programs an easy way to compare anesthesia residents. Is it a great indicator of how you will perform as a fellow? Probably not. But as with all standardized exams, it gives a general sense of either your intellectual ability or your ability to prepare. I wouldn't be surprised if they were waiting for those scores.

This sucks for me. My last letter writer is unable to upload my letter into ERAS and my program won't help him since he is not officially a faculty at the program but rather an associate type person so I'm stuck having paid a ton of money, completed my app, and haven o ability for any program to eval my app since I don't have the third letter. Can I get a refund for all the $$ I paid - anyone know?

How important are usmle scores? Mine are not exactly very stellar.....

It's one piece of the application. Everything is important but one missing piece wont ruin your application. I think they look at the entire applicant picture and decide who to pick.

Not very. If they want a standardized exam to compare candidates, they have more recent ones.

I'm not sure there is much other than USMLE.

True, but the matter of the fact is that these tests once you are in residency become pretty much meaningless. On another topic, I've gotten numerous emails requesting further info - is that indicative that they are interested or am I reading too much into this? I would think that if I was not in the least interesting to programs they would just reject me. Thoughts?

Need moar interviews

If a non-ACGME accredited program were to make an offer, is it wise to accept it? Can it be accepted and the match continued or is one supposed to leave the match?

If you accept a position but participate in the match you may be in violation of the NRMP... and you certainly could be held in breach of contract for the non-acgme fellowship you accept.

Is it wise to accept a non-ACGME position prior to the match/during the match? I get your point regarding that if one taes the position the match is done and we need to pull out.

Also is there a list of non-acgme accredited programs?

I'm wondering, how do you upload ITE scores to ERAS? Also, is applying in early April considered a late application?

I'd say accreditation is important. It depends on where and how you eventually want to practice, I suppose.

True. But not everyone will match to an ACGME program.

You can't upload ITE scores to ERAs. You have to email individually to the programs that require/request it. Considering ERAs allow you to submit applications Dec. 1, 2016, I have to say that applying in April is considered a very laid-back approach.

This might be a super stupid question, but a lot of programs on their websites ask for a CV in addition to ERAS application (as well a ITE etc). Doesn't ERAS compile all our information into a "CV" format? Or am I to email a separate CV with essentially the exact same info that is in my ERAS?

ERAS does create a CV type document, and I don't think that you need to submit an additional CV. I think that a lot of programs have not updated their websites from when the Pain fellowships used to be through non-ERAS types of application system.

Dudes it's like tumble weeds out here. What's going on? Is it premature to start contacting programs? My app is complete and I have heard nothing - either good or bad.

I just got an email from Mayo Jacksonville saying that they will start sending invitations in late May. So there's that.

same here. not hearing anything back is pretty draining. i wish they all had to inform applicants by a certain date so we can just put it to rest

Wow. I am glad so very glad that I did not apply earlier. I'd be pulling my hair. Anyone know how many people have applied? I know no one can give me an actual answer, but I'm asking anyways.

Yes agreed! At least it would help plan and give closure. How are you dudes scheduling interviews - do you get time off for IVS or do you use vacay time

So of the 23 programs to which I've applied, I've obtained correspondence from 5. Two interview invites and three requests for more info. Not much going on out there yet.

I applied to Mayo Jax as well...and got no email! Does that mean I'm cut!?
