2016-2017 PM&R Application Cycle

Help!! Not sure whats going on, while I did submit my third LOR right before the MSPE was released I have 7 rejections, and only 1 interview after I mass applied to nearly every program!

I'm an AMG with 219/221 and my third year grades are all HP minus P in surgery. I do have a red flag which is that I repeated second year due to bad grades, but is PM&R really this competitive now? At what point should I freak out??

Yes, PM&R seems to be super competitive now. It is a great field, just so diverse it is hard to explain everything you do

First of all, no point in freaking out. Aside from reaching out to some program coordinators there really isn't anything you can do anymore right now.

There are likely still a lot of interviews to come as programs send out second and third rounds of invites, so not all hope is lost. Last year at this point lots of people didn't even half of the total interviews they ended up with.

Do you have a PM&R letter? Is there a chance you didn't send your usmle/comlex transcripts to programs or forget to assign one of your letters or personal statements? It seems like contacting programs is a very delicate thing to do properly and at the right time, so not sure how much use that would be for you. The repeating a year is definitely a knock considering how competitive the field is getting. But if everything else in uour app is in line and you have decent letters, I'd think you'd at least get a few more interviews.

Talk to someone at your home program, if you have one :/

Tom Brady went in the 6th round, and look how he turned out!

In all seriousness, I have gone in the first round for some strong programs, 4th round in others, and flat out rejected by others. It can feel arbitrary at times. There will definitely be cancellations, and those offers will go out as they open back up. There are apparently interviews into February. In addition to what UK said up there, the only thing you can do at this point is be patient for the moment, and hope that the few PMR applicants sitting on 25+ interviews are going to get bored after RIC, UW, Spaulding, Kessler, and UPMC, and start cancelling the programs further down the prestige list.

I have two PM&R letters - one is at least good, the other great. And nah everything is uploaded and plus I've still been getting rejections haha

The more people add to the applicant info page of the spreadsheet, the better it can help future classes. Leave the username blank if needed, that part doesn't make much difference. I'm a big proponent of using data to benefit anyone it can. Even if you want to wait till after application season, that's great too. Thanks and hope everyone is hanging in there and doing well !

Anyone get confirmation of their Hopkins interview dates yet?

University of Minnesota, 10/18 (looked like some heard yesterday too). Dates in spreadsheet

I do have a red flag which is that I repeated second year due to bad grades, but is PM&R really this competitive now?

I'd agree that is a red flag, and that is probably why you got quick rejections from multiple programs. Some programs have strict cut offs, and apparently you didn't meet them. The other programs who you haven't heard from are still reviewing your application (or they tossed it out and you will never hear back from them). All you can do now is wait it out. Hopefully you made a good personal statement so that programs who actually read everything in you application will be able to look past any red flags and give you an invite.

Pretty much every residency field is competitive. And, yes, PM&R is competitive too - its been so for several years now and increasing in competitiveness annually. I've said it multiple times on this forum, but you really need to have a completed application by the first day ERAS opens. You also missed out on several programs who sent out all their invites before the MSPE because you didn't have all your rec letters in on time.

anyone receive SUNY downstate confirmation yet?

Does anyone interviewing at Mary Free Bed know if they do a resident meet and greet the night before or after the interview? I didn't see any mention of it in their correspondence and I haven't heard from them about it either. Trying to plan flights.

I got Kingsbrook confirmation about an hour ago.

I highly doubt they will have a meet and greet without any current residents. I suppose it's possible...but unlikely.

Isn't that a brand new program? They're not going to have any residents to meet or greet you.

Anyone got any info on Hopkins? Always hear about a lot of other programs with big names except this one.

Some negative things have been said about Hopkins, but I personally really liked the program overall and would have been happy to match there. They have some impressive faculty, impressive job placement, great fellowships placement, great interventional time, and of course big name. One of the downsides to the interview is that it's a massive interview - i think like 50-100 people or something like that, so it's hard to meet residents, you don't necessarily interview with physicians - some people do, some don't, which is a drawback. But if you get an IV, I would definitely go. I think people do pretty well from Hopkins.

I would imagine at this point a strong candidate might have 70-80% of the invites they are going to get, while a weaker candidate might have more to come with cancellations. For instance, there is someone in the spreadsheet with a 255 Step 1 and 27 interviews... I would wager a fiver that they don't go to all of them.

In terms of total numbers, I started the season hoping to get 10 invites based on the graph in Charting Outcomes. That's about where it crosses the threshold for 90% for USMDs.

For DOs, looks like closer to 12

I think we will definitely see some trickling down of invites as people cancel. I can say just for me I'm not going on all the interviews I have right now due to schedules, and am already starting to cancel some. I'm sure the people with 20+ interviews are going to do the same thing.

Dang, really was hoping for that. Since they have also sent out rejections, any idea about contacting them if we still haven't heard?

I had emailed them over a week ago asking about their interview dates since I was delaying purchasing flights to other interviews until I maybe heard from Utah since it was number 2 on my list..I never heard back from them until the wait list notification today.

Can't hurt to email them..maybe they do still actually have spots and were just giving me a soft no lol

Wooow scary...Utah is really high on my list, I havent heard anything from them either. I also rotated in Salt Lake so thought for sure they would at least give me an interview. Im not sure if it's better, worse, or doesnt mean anything that they haven't contacted me.

It was a little cryptic..

"Unfortunately, we are unable to extend any more invitations to interview right now, due to the limited number of remaining interview slots. Periodically, we may have an opening for one of the interview days and we will contact you if a slot becomes available. "

So they are unable to extend more interviews but it's because there's a limited number left? Idk lol.

UC Irvine emailed me saying my application is complete and that they have a large number of highly qualified applicants that they are still reviewing apps and will update me later. Mean anything? Soft rejection, courtesy follow up, good sign, nothing, that it's Friday night and I shouldn't be on SDN? Lol

I went to the residency fair this afternoon at the AAPMR annual assembly. While I wasn't able to talk to talk to the PC directly cuz it was chaotic, I heard her telling applicants that they should expect a response early this upcoming week.

Talked to Dr Whitehair at the residency fair about this email I also received. He said this email is not a rejection. They've sent out real rejections so seems like this is more like a waitlist. Btw, He is amazing!

I got that email when I applied years ago - I never did hear back from them though after the deadline passed. So it's not technically a rejection, but it's a "maybe" - depending on what we have towards the end of the season type of thing.
