Sorry to both of you :( Would you mind sharing your stats? I'm surprised by Stanford's fast turnaround time!

Dont mind sharing, LizzyM 72, three extended research experiences, no pubs but several presentations, lots of volunteer work and EC's but kinda weak on the clinical experience, working on that now. Planning to send an update on the clinical exp. to schools before they start sending out decisions. Honestly, I'm kinda surprised by Stanford, my secondary was submitted Wednesday night and I received the rejection Friday morning, I probably screwed up somewhere because that means my full application got reviewed and decided on in one day...I am a re-applicant so maybe thats why...

I would not look into that much or use it to forecast other applications. Each school has a different process/ criteria... and Stanford might just have MSTP Committee that likes to make fast decisions and not get students' hopes up. I believe UChicago is same way. Best of luck! =]

Mine: LizzyM 74, again with the 3 research experiences (1000+ hours), 3 publications (1 abstract/presentation first author, 2 contributing authors), some pretty unique EC's (I'm a pseudo-nontraditional applicant), 500+ clinical hours, and a bunch of volunteering.

UChicago was one of my "meh, I guess I'll chuck an application here for grins" schools so while it was less than pleasant to see a rejection, it wasn't to the point that I had plans to crawl in a hole with a pint of ice cream...

Guys don't get discouraged about individual rejections. Many students in my class were rejected from random schools, including ones ranked lower than ours (not that rankings matter much anyway, but I'm tryna make a point ;)). Different programs have different things they are looking for, potentially influenced by things like last year's class or funding, so don't read too much into individual decisions. Start worrying if you haven't gotten many invites by December.

Thanks @elphabaelsa!

You guys know any centralized source for number of interviews given and acceptances given out? These are hard to find numbers that I am pretty sure the schools don't even report, but I just thought I would ask in case someone knew.

The reason it is not published is because I beleive there is a lot of variation from year to year. I think good rule of thumb is that around 30-50% of interviewees are accepted

Ya I think you're right about the variation. One MSTP director told me that last cycle they gave out 60% of the acceptances they gave out the year before and they ended up with the same number of matriculates. So variable.

Considering that most schools matriculate 10-15 students and interview approximately 60-100 I would say aproximately 25- 30 offers are made. Take a look at John hopkins statistics below

Primary Applications Received:591
Completed Secondary Applications Received:458
Interviews:61
Acceptances (funded and unfunded):32
Initial Funded Offers:19
Mariculant class size: 10

If you examine table B-8 (2015 cycle data) from the AAMC data website, you only find 8 MSTPs with more than 13 positions. There are 26 of the 45 MSTPs with 10 or more positions. On the other hand, there were 13 MD/PhD programs (non-MSTP) and 25 MSTPs with 5-10 first-year positions, that is:

38 MD/PhD programs with 5-10 slots as compared to
20 MD/PhD programs with 11 or more positions, including
8 MD/PhD programs with 14 or more positions.

Am I right in thinking that JHU's 50% acceptance rate (32/61) is lower than most because they expect most people will matriculate (because they're a top school)? Maybe a lower ranked school like Colorado (still great btw) would have 60 interviews and 40 acceptances. What do people think?

A lot of schools will start with only giving out few acceptances and then waiting till March-April to give out additional offers once students start really committing. At this point, schools can see student acceptances and may not accept someone they see already accepted at a top 5 school/ or someone who has not expressed continued interest. Therefore, I doubt 40 acceptances is that common, but who knows for sure...

Well the 50% number counts unfunded acceptances as well, funded percentage will be around 33% I think its is kinda of strategic as well. I assume that a good percentage of students who receive an acceptance from JHU would have an offer from another top tier as well so I think they take that consideration as well. Just guessing...The only one who would give you a definitive answer would be a director...

Post-Interview

U Washington and Stanford :(

When I found these threads I didn't think I'd end up posting, but this is going to be such a long, emotional process we might as well share in it. @penguinsrgreat stay positive! I also started my cycle with a rejection, only to get an interview 3 days later and another rejection the next day.

Also, am I correct in assuming that Stanford automatically forwards your app to MD only for everyone?

@crystallizer I got one of those as well. the letter was a rejection sorry!
Damn, why don't they just email us or say "rejected" on the portal? I see the status "a decision will be mailed to you" and my brain wants to hang on to hope until I get the physical letter... just draws out the pain longer! Sorry for rant... *cries*

I feel your pain I was still hoping for something good up until I opened the letter. Real sadists up at u Washington lol

Did anyone get an email from Cornell requesting a letter or something? I got one asking for a LOR from one of my PIs that I worked with briefly it's taking him a but longer than I expected I just hope it's not all in vain

Briefly, as in summer program brief? Kinda worried to hear this because I've long lost touch with my summer mentor of >4 yrs ago...

Nah its pretty recent It was for only about 4 months as a tech just felt that my PI didnt really see a lot of my work or know me that well (he was a busy clinician, i probably only met with him a handful of times) I also had a plenty of research experiences so i felt it might not make a difference but apparently Cornell thinks so (and wont review my application without it...)

I probably screwed up somewhere because that means my full application got reviewed and decided on in one day...I am a re-applicant so maybe thats why...

Do you think it's about not writing something good in the re-applicant question box? The one where they give you like three sentences to explain the difference between your first app and your app this time? That question was awkward for me because I applied super late and got on the waitlist last year, and since then I've been working the same job (research) so not much has changed but I felt okay applying again so soon just because I could apply much earlier this year... I literally applied day of deadline last year. (I know super bad... bad girl... But I was living in Japan and didn't have my head in the game really)

(Sorry for run on sentences, typing on my phone)
