Just got the call!!!!!! Interviewed early February.

Congrats!

I think we can all assume it isn't by interview date now. :)

Maybe by alphabetical order?

No it's pretty random. They split the names among the people who call. I interviewed with the first group and have a last name in the middle of the alphabet and I just got a call.

Is it still on the table that they can call Monday considering how late they started calling today? Can anyone confirm that?

According to the admissions office (I work at Duke so I dropped by because I have a friend still waiting) officially they're going to try to get out all acceptances by 6pm today, but there may be some spill over into monday morning.

This is what happens when you get an acceptance call from Duke in the middle of a run!

I feel like theres such a small reporting of acceptances this year compared to other years. Usually its around 25. Also, previous years there have all been calls after hours. So this 6 oclock business seems strange.

That's what they're trying for; who knows what the reality will be.

Regardless, I'm assuming I'm out of it at this point. Already had one rejection today, and I don't have my hopes high for Duke. Congratulations to everyone accepted!

Same here. Congratulations everyone to who has been accepted!

I was actually the first person this year for Duke to get an interview invitation. Dr. Yee actually called me beginning of August telling me and asking if I could schedule my interview so they could test their scheduling system since it's brand new for this year.

A little disappointing that my chances as of now are very unlikely of ending my cycle with a call from him too, but that's the way life works sometimes. You don't always get what you want. But still, best wishes to everyone accepted! Duke is an amazing institution and I know you all will become great clinicians and fantastic leaders in healthcare. Hopefully we'll cross paths later in our careers, when we're not anonymous avatars.

Sayonara!

I wonder when rejection emails will go out. I just want to know and stop having any false hope so I can move on, at this point. I know I didn't get in, but I'll still have that nagging "they could still call" feeling until I get some sort of confirmation.

Anyone know when the official email for acceptance goes out or if there is a FB page for accepted students? Got the call from Dr Yee a few hours ago but I'm finding it hard to chill unless I have some sort of official trail.

Congrats to everyone accepted, You all worked hard for this. To all please remember my words, our self worth is not determined by medical school decisions. Keep your head up. Firm believer everything works itself out and who knows it might be Monday for some of you and even me. Don't be discouraged.

Did anyone get the emails to confirm our receipt of acceptance/ second look specifics? I keep thinking I hallucinated and double checking my phone to confirm from my call log that I actually got a call from NC lol.

The woman who called me said that emails would be sent on Monday!

I'd plan on flying in that Friday night and leaving Sunday afternoon!
FYI, Second look starts Friday morning and runs through lunch on Sunday. Last year there was also an informal dinner on Thursday night for those who got to Durham early. I don't know if they sent you a schedule already, but the schedule should be very similar to the MSTP second look schedule (found via google at https://medschool.duke.edu/educatio...ntist-training-program/admissions/second-look) minus the Thursday (that's MSTP-specific).

They also usually organize student-hosting for Second Look with current students, mostly MS1's, and you can easily Uber to your host's place (usually max $25 to anywhere in Durham from RDU) unless your host can pick you up from the airport

So, I'm wondering if this happened to anyone else and if anyone knows why Duke does this:

When I interviewed they asked me some questions about my political preferences, e.g. vague questions of what I think of Wal-Mart and about communism. The interviewers either couldn't or weren't able to answer clarifying questions, but they seemed to have little boxes they needed to pigeonhole your answer into such as pro-market vs socialist (e.g. they would ask very general follow-up like "so you are against the market?").

I don't know if their admissions office is just weird or if the whole school has ethics issues. My interactions with people outside of admissions have been professional but my impression from the admission office is obviously very, very negative. This feels like a dumb thing to weigh heavily in deciding where to attend but it is what it is.

This is obviously a throw-away account.

I didn't have any experiences like that on my interview day. They certainly seemed to like questions which were multifaceted and played devil's advocate to try to get more complexity out of your answer and see how you can reason, look at all aspects of an issue, etc. I don't think they were trying to pigeonhole you into specific answers, and in theory, they don't care what your answer is as long as you can reason well (and it's not psychotic or something), but if you feel that bias played a role, you could contact admissions about this, and explain that you took so long to talk about it because you were concerned the discussion could negatively affect your application (this is assuming you didn't get an acceptance yesterday; if you did, I'd still let them know, as it could help them in the future and can't hurt you now).

I highly doubt the boxes they were checking off had to do with what your political preferences actually were, and I doubt even more so that this would be the basis of their decision. They were probably marking off things like "picked a side and made a coherent argument" or "considered both sides of the argument" or "showed so and so characteristic with their answer". These questions aren't to pick people based on political beliefs but on how you can present your opinion and show the way that you think things through.

Also I'm not sure how many other MMIs you've done, but questions of this sort aren't some strange thing that only Duke does, they are pretty standard MMI type questions imo.

Those questions are generally off limits when you apply for a job, but I don't know if that is true for med school applications.

I was grilled at every interview question station, regardless of whether or not my answer was 'more conservative' or 'more liberal' (and yes, my answers changed from station to station). This was the most intense MMI of all three MMIs I interviewed at- I think they asked these questions because they wanted to see how you handle talking about more 'hot button' issues more than anything else. I don't think they are trying to create a class that is full of a certain political mindset.

That's interesting, I didn't feel like I was getting grilled at all. Everyone I talked to brought up points against what I was saying, but in a very conversational way.

Edit: but then again i didn't get in so I'm obvi not the MMI guru lol

Could have been my over-caffeinated and hyper-stressed vibes of the day that made me perceive it as more intense than it was! Whose to say haha. Just glad it's all over.

Any chances of more calls Monday

If each physician doing calls got a list of ~30 there's a chance someone may not have gotten their list yet (last-minute deliberations and such). I don't have my hopes up though.

I've just never heard of school, even Duke in the past, getting all phone calls done in one day

I imagine they may be calling through early next week... I don't think they can get all the phone calls done in one day! For those of you still waiting to hear, I just got a call this morning about PCLT! Started crying...
