Hi friends! I'm SO sorry I'm behind again! Things were crazy with my acceptance (STILL FREAKING OUT AHHHH!) falling during final exams, then graduation, and then moving to my new home. Please know that I have been thinking so much about this community and singing my praises about all of you to my friends and literally anyone around me.

CONGRAULATIONS @limbobimbo for ANOTHER phenomenal waitlist snag!!! How awesome!!! I wish they wouldn't have waited until the veryyyy last minute for you, but this is just the best news! So thrilled for you. Also, HUGE CONGRATS also to my amazing, beautiful, wonderful buddy @smiley buckeye!!!! So happy you've settled on your new home. I have no doubt you would have done a phenomenal job at either institution, but UNC is very fortunate to have you. I'll be cheering for you for years!

For those who have not heard the good news yet and are preparing for another cycle, I've already started my cheering for you waaaay in advance. I imagine that this time is exceedingly difficult for you, and my heart breaks to think that schools didn't see -- this time -- how awesome you are. I have every finger and toe crossed for you. I fully believe that you will make a huge, lasting impact on the life of even one patient someday... and that won't change just because the journey may not start this year. But it still stinks, so I'm sending virtual hugs. And cheering loudly for you for whatever your future plans may entail!

I'm guessing that things will slow down a bit more on this thread now, but please know that all of you will continue to be in my heart and in my thoughts over the coming years. You guys have meant a ton to me this year and really pulled (or dragged? I was struggling a bit LOL) me through this cycle. It seems like this forum has meant a lot to a lot of people, and I'm so proud of the little family we've become!! I hope to meet everyone soon at a conference. Hi everyone! I have lurked these forums forever and want to contribute my info for future generations of MD/PhD applicants. I said this in my other post, but I have been awed by the support and love that everyone has expressed for each other on this forum throughout the process and seeing it definitely helped with my own stress and anxiety! I'm really impressed with everyone who has gotten into such amazing programs, and sending good wishes to those who are still waiting/hoping for a change in their status. Likewise, I was so honored to meet all my fellow applicants at interviews and re-visits over the course of this year.

I am a non-traditional PhD applicant (social science) and after a loooong and stressful application process, I'm happy to say I will be attending my first choice school, UCLA! Adding acceptances there, U of Florida, and UC Irvine. The withdrawals were hard to send; I felt so welcomed and at home at both UCI and UF on my revisits. A question for you folks who were accepted off waitlists: how frequently did you guys communicate with your programs after hearing about the waitlist offer? did you send updates/letters of intent (loi) to the school(s)? if yes, how many and what did these updates/loi's talk about? do you feel or know if these communications helped or hurt your waitlist status? are paper/manuscript submissions only worthy updates if first author or are other papers with different authorship positions valid updates as well? any tips for others still on waitlists and for future applicants?

It definitely depends on the program. Some will specifically say to contact them weekly reaffirming interest (Sinai comes to mind). However, I would say that in most cases update when you have something substantial and send a letter of intent if you truly mean it. I did at my top choice. Also, if you ask for a status update, use that as an opportunity to reaffirm your interest. Hope that helps!

@mashinator I sent an update about once a month after being waitlisted in February. I didn't send in a formal LOI but I did reiterate several times that the school was my top choice. My summer research mentor also sent in an additional LOR on my behalf (not included in my original AMCAS application).

Also, if you ask for a status update, use that as an opportunity to reaffirm your interest. Hope that helps!

Yep, agree with ADW on this one! I asked for a status update twice (once the day before traffic day and another a week afterwards to inform them of my upcoming travels) and reiterated my interest.

Hi, @mashinator! Really happy to see you again. I'm so, so, so sorry though if you are stuck in waitlist limbo!! Gah. I will keep on crossing all fingers and toes for you. If the two waitlists you've posted in the other thread are current, my experience/understanding is that both programs are very welcoming of updates and other correspondence to keep in touch and show interest. Perhaps my buddy @smiley buckeye can speak more about Case specifically? And correct me if I've made a mistake?

Of the many waitlists I was on this year (LOL), I would say I kept in pretty solid touch with most. I was corresponding about every 1-2 months at first, since I was waitlisted or waiting on decisions since back in December. In total, I sent 2-3 formal update letters or letters of interest and 1 letter of intent. The rest were more basic emails (1-2 paragraphs max). I was placed in a very high waitlist spot at the school I'm matriculating at in late January and still was likely writing about once per month throughout most of the time, as @pineapplecake mentions. Once the April 30 deadline came closer, I was talking with this school in some form about every 1-2 weeks, as they were incredibly helpful with letting me know what was happening and I had lots of graduation-related updates with decision time also drawing near.

For some programs, you may be right that the only things "worthy" of an update are a paper, etc -- fortunately, my programs made it clear that they were happy to hear about almost everything under the sun from honors societies to graduation honors to small awards and beyond. Hopefully smileybuckeye can give you an idea on if Case is this way. I'm happy to try to talk more about what I did with my schools if you'd like to PM me.

My biggest general suggestion for those reading, as I received from a program director along the trail, is to try to show where you would fit in with the program in your update/interest statement when possible. If there was a specific mentor you met with during your interviews whom you really liked, let the program know that you would be honored to explore that lab and the wonderful things being done there, how that lab fits in well with your background but gives you a chance to learn something new, etc. My understanding is that if it comes down to you and another person for admissions, it will help the program if they can picture how you might contribute to their environment.

I'm not sure if I did everything "right" by any means, but afterwards the program leadership at my school did end up telling me that showing my interest was really appreciated, even though the waitlist was ranked. I always figured that showing interest can't hurt you as long as you're respectful and clearly don't demand or expect anything of them. What I mean by that is that I'd suggest being kind/respectful in every correspondence and showing that you do not feel the need or privilege to receive information ASAP, if that makes sense? I always tried to show that I was grateful for their consideration and anything they might be able to tell me about either my status or the process in general, and part of the reason I loved my programs so much is that they always volunteered more information than I could have expected! (Although I know this is NOT true of all programs, per the experiences of some other SDN'ers... such a bummer!).

I have also been very saddened recently to realize that activity on the forums may die down soon. I suppose it's all exciting though as those who drift away are likely doing so to prepare for the crazy, exciting future ahead! You all have meant so much to me, and I hope there are ways we can continue to connect as we start up new journeys. If anyone has ideas about safe ways that those interested can keep in touch in some capacity and keep cheering for each other, please share. I will otherwise miss you guys far too much!

I sent a letter of intent that really focused on my fit into the program, both in research interests and in general orientation toward research. Not everyone has this option, but I also communicated to my undergrad institution's pre-health adviser and my research mentor that it was my first choice program, so that they could communicate to the school that it was a "real" LOI/I hadn't sent one anywhere else. I didn't ask for a formal new LOR though.

I would preface this by saying that each school is different. But in my case with UMD, I was told that my contact and enthusiasm was what stood out to them. I wrote a LOI (typed, signed, then scanned) to the directors, sent email updates about conferences and awards, and called around commitment day. I then asked how frequently I could call for updates without being annoying. Fortunately, I was told that it was annotated in my application every time I called, and I was encouraged to continue to make contact. I hope this helps.
